Djemaa el Fna

There are cities you fall in love with instantly and there are cities that you have to explore and slowly discover before you love them . Then there are cities like Marrakech that force you into a never ending love and hate relationship.

The pungent markets and souks through the small narrow streets were a prime example of this relationship. The plethora of beautiful colors, spicy smells, and bustle of human interaction flirt with your imagination on every corner and stall. The over-stimulation of the senses leave you disorientated and unguarded and before you know it you may be scammed into a seemingly innocent tourist trap. The same busy crowds that tickle your senses may leave you feeling claustrophobic and trapped. The wonderful street foods that lust upon your taste buds can quickly turn upon you and leave you in a night of stomach pains and cramps.

There is one feature in Marrakech that will win over the heart of any visitor and that is Djemaa el Fna . Djemaa el Fna is the main square in the heart of the old Medina that connects all city life from the great mosque to the souks to the commercial areas. Djemaa el Fna is a beautiful square that captivated my imagination and kept luring me back to Marrakech. I returned many times to the rooftops surrounding this square to captivate its charm.
